The Safe Online Youth Fellowship, brought to you by NerdzFactory Company through the support of Meta, is designed to engage and empower youths to become leaders in digital safety within their communities in Lagos and Ogun States.
According to a global study released by Surfshark, an Amsterdam-based cybersecurity firm, Nigeria was the 32nd most breached country on the globe in the first quarter of 2023. During this period, Nigeria experienced 82,000 leaked accounts, reflecting a staggering 64% increase from the previous quarter. This alarming trend highlights the vulnerability of Nigerian internet users to cyber threats, including data breaches, identity theft, and online fraud. The Safe Online program aims to reduce these numbers by raising awareness of young people in Nigeria on how to stay safe online.
The Safe Online Youth Fellowship is a core component of the Safe Online Program. It targets youths with a passion for digital safety, offering specialized training and opportunities to advocate for responsible and secure online behaviors among young people. This initiative not only educates but actively involves participants in implementing and leading digital safety projects.
